Adversity as a Rose

The corona-crisis is a source of adversity that challenges each of us on many levels. As you cope with uncertainty, instability, and fear, it is important to remember that good things usually happen right alongside bad things.

A rose is a perfect symbol of the duel nature of adversity. Sharp thorns that can cause hurt and buds that foreshadow future growth usually accompany a beautiful rose. When bad things (thorns) happen, good things (roses) and growth potentials (buds) usually accompany it. When life is thorny, roses and buds are not always easily apparent. But when you look a little closer, you will usually find them. And if you can’t find them in the midst of adversity, they will appear soon.
Here’s an exercise that helps you build resilience during difficult times as you acknowledge thorns while identifying the roses and buds alongside them:
1.    Think back about your day. What was one of your thorns? This is a stressful, difficult, or painful experience you had.
Examples:
  •  I worried about getting sick.
  •  I worried a loved one would get sick.
  • I felt lonely.
  • My finances felt uncertain.
  •  I struggled to eat healthy.
2.    What was one of your roses? This is something good that you experienced today alongside that thorn.
Examples:
  • I felt closer to a loved one.
  • I had more gratitude and wasted less.
  • I had some laughs with someone.
  • I found a way to enjoy me-time.
  • The air is cleaner.
  • I noticed my strength.
3.    What was one of your buds? This is how the thorn invites you to grow, how you’re already growing, or how you think you might grow through this thorny adversity.
Examples:
  • Learning to challenge fear.
  • Getting something done that I was putting off.
  • Becoming more grateful.
  • Taking better care of my health.
  • Enjoying a stronger bond with someone.
  • Gaining trust in myself to get through hard things.

On difficult days it can be hard to find roses and buds among the thorns. If that’s the case for you today, be kind to yourself. And be assured, that a rose or bud will soon appear.
